About Sexy Intersections: Anti-Oppression & Sex Positivity
Sexy Intersections is a core class in SexPositive Portland for all of us wanting to learn more about how we show up/speak up/receive feedback from others when we share space together.
Navigating intersectionality within sex-positivity isn’t binary, nor always easy to understand even for the most informed around identities. Often within various sex-positive communities, there can be significant gaps in power that include race, gender, accessibility, religion, economic and YES, even still, sexuality.
We’ll explore how we can be better “naked neighbors” by recognizing moments where we might be in a position of identity inequality, harm or minimization & how we can close those gaps together.
During this Workshop, we will:
- Reflect on our many identities & how they shape our own expertise.
- Reflect without judgment on the areas where we could learn & grow.
- Discuss how to better handle those moments when we’ve made a harmful mistake & how to approach it with grace.
All workshop elements are optional participation; we do not believe in mandatory fun!
This class is a good space for beginners who are eager to learn, in addition to well experienced community members who want more tools & techniques to navigate sexy spaces & be better allies to others & themselves as well.
We’ll think about our many identities & how they shape our expertise, & the areas where we need to learn & grow. We’ll spend time talking about the inevitable mistakes we make & the ways our actions & words can hurt each other, even with the best of intention. We’ll also walk through ways to better handle those hard times when we’ve done things that don’t align with who we think we are.
We’ll center race & gender in the exercises we work on together while learning more about how all aspects of oppression & privilege effect our sex positive interactions in community. We’ll encourage folks from all walks of life to work on perspective-taking from our privileges as well as our oppressions.
Featuring Jimena Alvarado
Jimena Alvarado (she/her) has been teaching social justice professionally since 2009. She is a tenured professor at Portland Community College, and earned a PhD in Community Psychology and a Master’s in Women’s Studies.
She specializes in conversational learning and her curriculum focuses on getting comfortable with learning from the social justice mistakes that we all make. She regularly provides training to organizations on incorporating intersectionality and anti-racism work into their everyday processes. Sanctuary club is a 21+, LGBTQ+, ADA accessible, anti-racist establishment that celebrates diversity. Leave any bigotry at the door.

Sex Positive Portland
SexPositive Portland (SPP) is a non-profit organization in Portland, Oregon that creates educational and social experiences around positive sexuality, identity, lifestyle, consent, and body-positivity for adults.
We are a member/volunteer organization. Our mission is to change the world by promoting healthy sexuality through community and education. Our members plan and host events centered around understanding and exploring all aspects of human sexuality, consent, relationship styles, kink, gender, and orientation.
SPP is a private members organization that is welcoming to new folks while prioritizing privacy for members. We have many events that are open to the public including social events, core classes, and consensual touch workshops.
