Love, Loss, and Legalese: a workshop on planning for modern- and chosen- families
Don’t leave important life (and death) decisions to chance, estranged family, or the government.
Are you part of a modern family that defies tradition? Whether you’re polyamorous, queer, trans, cohabit with non-marital partners, or simply want to be able to care for (and be cared for) chosen family in times of loss, you deserve a plan for your future. Estate and end-of-life planning is for all of us, not just the wealthy.
Sanctuary PDX and the Legally Bound Group (www.legallyboundgroup.com) are sponsoring this free workshop tackling the serious business of estate planning, emergency preparedness, and healthcare decision-making. We’ll cover everything from wills and trusts to medical directives and powers of attorney, all while keeping it real and relatable. Don’t leave important life (and death) decisions to chance, estranged family, or the government.
We will have a notary and a legal assistant available onsite to help you complete an advance directive (or healthcare living will), hospital visitation paperwork, and a list of things you can do today to get your affairs in order. Additionally, we will have a death doula available to provide insights on end-of-life healthcare options.
Why You Need This:
- Have Fun While You Learn: Because serious topics don’t have to be boring.
- Protect Your Wishes: Ensure your wishes are honored, even when you can’t speak for yourself.
- Provide for your Loved Ones: If you have a shared household with nonmarital partners or chosen family, make sure they don’t need to deal with the loss of their housing and your support while grieving from the loss of your company.
- Practical Advice: Learn actionable steps (many of them free) to safeguard your and your chosen family’s future. Walk away with things you can do now even if you’re not a legal expert. Many of these resources are free or nominal cost.
- Legal Insights: Understand the nuances of estate planning and healthcare law.
- Get it done!: Notary onsite to help you complete and execute your healthcare advance directive (for Oregonians).
- Community and Good Times: Curious about Sanctuary and need an excuse to sing 4 NonBlonde’s “What’s Going On” at full volume? Come for information on how to care for your loved ones BUTT stay for Naked Karaoke!
We will be talking about some heavy topics like death, impairment, mental incapacity, family dysfunction, and how to navigate within a system where taking some simple steps can make a huge difference for your loved ones.
Nothing in this workshop should be considered or taken as legal advice. It is for informational purposes only.
